Fillière is the result of the official merger on 1 January 2017 of the municipalities of Aviernoz, Évires, Les Ollières, Saint-Martin-Bellevue and Thorens-Glières. The former communes have become delegated communes, retaining their names, their territories and their own characteristics.

With a population of 9,781, Fillière is the second most populous commune in the Greater Annecy conurbation. It represents the largest area within the new Greater Annecy conurbation and is the second largest commune in the Haute-Savoie department. Predominantly rural, it has five market towns of varying sizes and vast expanses of woods and forests. The Fillière river runs through the municipality before joining the Fier, providing access to the Glières plateau, an emblematic site of the French Resistance, as well as to sports sites and mountain pastures. Its economic activity is mainly concentrated to the west, on the border with Annecy.
